Nexus, a groundbreaking initiative focused on discipleship and leadership development, began its journey in India in 2017. The program was introduced by the former Regional NYI Coordinator, Rev. Diego Lopez, with approval from the India Field Strategy Coordinator, Rev. Sunil Dandge, under the visionary leadership of NYI Coordinator, Rev. Vijay Bhalerao. Integral to its inception was Rev. Louise Kenyon, a faculty member at Nazarene Theological College, whose contributions to developing the Nexus coursework provided the foundation for this incredible journey.

In its early days, Nexus operated at the zonal level, bringing together participants from four zones: East, West, North, and South, covering 14 districts. Each zone hosted 25–30 participants, and the total number of youth trained during this phase ranged from 90 to 110. The purpose was simple yet powerful: “to equip young leaders across India for effective discipleship and leadership,” nurturing their growth in ministry and their impact on their local churches.

From 2017 to 2018, Nexus focused on zonal-level training. By 2019, however, it transitioned to district-level engagement. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID- 19 pandemic, the program adapted by conducting online sessions, ensuring continuity in its mission. Some districts even facilitated two training cohorts, resulting in over 640 young leaders being trained to date.

Participants are encouraged to actively serve in their local churches, using their God- given gifts to minister to children, youth, and adults. The results have been inspiring. Youth groups have been revived in many churches, and new leaders have stepped up to guide them. Some participants have started Sunday schools in new communities, while others have boldly reopened closed village churches. Beyond these tangible outcomes, Nexus has inspired countless youth to live Christlike lives and embrace the call to true discipleship.

A significant milestone in the Nexus journey was a three-day celebration held in Hyderabad in November, where 205 participants and leaders came together to rejoice in the program’s success and shared vision. Many young participants experienced God’s calling in their lives. Kunal Manyal, a Nexus participant, shared, “Nexus ignited my understanding of God’s calling, and I am dedicated to nurturing it with unwavering commitment.” Another participant, Yash Nade, shares, “Nexus has truly helped me understand the true meaning of leadership – what leadership is and why it is important for the Kingdom of God. As Jesus said, ‘Go and make disciples,’ Nexus has inspired me to serve the Lord wholeheartedly, regardless of my circumstances or level of education.” This event also witnessed the launch of an insightful Bible study resource titled Nurturing Youth in the Lord. The book, crafted with contributions from various young writers and guided by an editorial team comprising Rev. DSP, Rev. Joseph Pawar, and Rev. Vijay Bhalerao, serves as a valuable tool for spiritual growth and leadership.

Looking to the future, under the leadership of the new Regional Youth Coordinator, Amy Warner, there is excitement about sharing God’s work in India with the rest of the region. Amy shared, “I’m really excited about how we can share what God is doing in His people in India with the rest of the region. We are looking for opportunities to mobilize these newly trained leaders across Eurasia and also hoping to support them in developing content and further training that we can share online, like we already have with the newly launched Bible study guide!

Nexus dreams of going even deeper. The next step, called “Nexus at the Local Church,” aims to bring discipleship and evangelism training directly to congregations, ensuring every young person has the opportunity to grow in their faith and make an impact. Rev. Vijay shares that this vision is about empowering youth at the grassroots level to share the gospel and cultivate discipleship.

Nexus in India is more than just a program; it’s a story of hope and change. By shaping leaders, strengthening churches, and nurturing Christlike disciples, it continues to inspire a generation of young people to rise up and make a difference in their communities and beyond.
