Nazarene Theological College (Manchester) offers new Postgraduate courses
Nazarene Theological College (NTC) has recently launched two new Master of Arts (MA) programmes in Wesley Studies and Urban Mission, as well as a PhD for Practitioners. These courses are supported by NTC’s strong Faculty team in the field of Wesley Studies, Mission Studies, and Practical Theology. Being located in Manchester, Nazarene Theological College is an ideal place for students to study the newly-developed courses.
The MA in Wesley Studies draws on the rich resources of Manchester Wesley Research Centre on the NTC campus and the Methodist Archives and Research Centre at the John Rylands Library in Manchester. Momentum UK is a missional agency based at NTC and strives to create, foster, and inspire a new wave of Christian thinking and practice. The MA in Urban Mission draws on this wealth of knowledge on campus, as well as NTC itself being situated within an urban context in the heart of Manchester. The PhD for Practitioners is an innovative course aimed specifically for those in ministry and mission contexts. Studied part-time over 6 years it aims to develop knowledge through robust academic research and reflective practice.
The PhD for Practitioners aims to combine Doctoral-level research with a non-traditional route for academic study, allowing practitioners to continue to practice whilst studying. It is structured so that years 1 – 3 build your portfolio of research, while years 4 – 6 develop your thesis. The MA in Urban Mission provides a foundation in reading the multiple facets of the city; including its culture, its nature, and its needs, and offers critical reflection on and engagement with different approaches to ministry in urban environments. Course units available include ‘The Church and the City’, ‘Urban Ministry and Mission’, and ‘Compassionate Ministry: The Church and Social Transformation.’ The MA in Wesley Studies is a unique course designed to offer the opportunity to research deeply into the important topic of Wesley Studies broadly-conceived, including the Wesleyan and evangelical traditions. Historical and theological seminar-based MA units are available in ‘The Life and Ecclesial Context of John Wesley’, ‘The Theology of John Wesley’, and ‘The Evangelical Revival in Britain’.
Dr Geordan Hammond, Lecturer in Church History and Wesley Studies comments on the MA in Wesley Studies, “When I came to Manchester a decade ago I discovered that the resources of the Methodist Archives and Manchester Wesley Research Centre provided almost endless exciting opportunities for exploring the Wesleyan tradition.”
Multiple study options are available for the Postgraduate courses, including full-time study, part-time study and distance learning, depending on the course and your personal circumstances. The programmes are all validated by The University of Manchester.
