Nexus Training Program
Nexus is a dynamic and comprehensive training program designed to equip and empower people to become leaders for youth ministry. Developed in partnership with Nazarene Theological College, it is designed to support leaders in their local contexts, providing a safe and encouraging environment for dialogue and theological reflection. The program is structured into two main components: Nexus Core and Nexus Explore, each offering unique learning opportunities and practical applications.
Through Nexus, we aim to bridge the gap between informal learning in local churches (e.g., Bible studies) and formal education in ministry and/or theology. Upon completion, participants will receive a certificate. Furthermore, participants will have access to resources for support (e.g., mentorship), guidance for further growth and development in leadership (Nexus In-Depth, formal education opportunities, ministry licensure, and ministry positions/opportunities), and connection to the larger Nexus community for encouragement and support.
Ongoing Development
The Nexus training program extends beyond the initial training weekends with Nexus In-Depth sessions. In these sessions, participants are provided with opportunities to engage in specialized training on a variety of topics. Some topics include coaching, mental health, engaging with religious groups outside of Christianity, peace talks, and others.
Additionally, participants are connected with Nazarene Educational Institutions and their District Boards of Ministry for continuous development and support. This ongoing engagement ensures that young leaders have access to resources and mentorship as they develop their callings and implement their learning in their local ministry contexts.
In summary, the Nexus Training Program is a holistic and impactful initiative designed to empower emerging leaders for youth ministry. Through reflective learning, practical application, and continuous support, participants are equipped to meet the unique needs of the youth in their communities and to grow in their personal and professional development.
Nexus Core
Nexus Core serves as the foundational module of the training program, focusing on essential aspects of youth ministry. This module spans approximately 12 hours of intensive teaching, typically delivered over a weekend or as part of a longer conference gathering. The core objective is to guide participants through reflective and practical applications of their learning.
Participants will delve into their personal journeys, exploring how their life experiences shape their approach to youth ministry. Core activities include creating reflective pieces that integrate life plans, development theories, and personal mission statements. These activities help participants to develop a deep understanding of adolescent development, identity formation, and faith integration.
Key elements of the Nexus Core module include:
- Reflective assignments on life experiences and their impact on youth ministry.
- Development of diagrams or collages illustrating adolescent changes.
- Crafting personal mission statements and philosophies of youth work.
Practical examples of engaging young people in exploring Christian faith.

Nexus Explore also comprises approximately 12 hours of teaching and encourages participants to reflect on their skills, gifts, and roles in ministry with young people. This module emphasizes critical and theological thinking about youth work and leadership.
Nexus Explore aims to deepen participants’ understanding of their leadership approaches, learning styles, and communication methods. The module includes activities such as:
- Reflecting on and developing leadership styles and communication techniques.
- Engaging in group discussions and presentations to foster collaborative learning.
Throughout the program, participants are encouraged to actively engage in forums and accountability groups, fostering a supportive community where they can reflect on their learning, share experiences, and receive ongoing support. This collaborative environment is crucial for the practical application of the skills and knowledge gained during the training.
